A Wooden Kitchen Trivet with a Hand-Cut Crab, Made in Baltimore

A great gift for the Maryland native, the friend who moved away and still misses a good crab feast, or the host whose kitchen is the heart of every get-together, this crab trivet is a little piece of home. The crab is hand cut with a scroll saw, right through a thick block of maple, in our Baltimore woodshop. It keeps a hot pan off the counter, and it's good-looking enough to leave out when dinner is over.

Why This Crab Trivet Is So Lovable

  • It does a real job: set a hot pan on it and your counter or table is protected from burn marks.
  • The crab is cut all the way through the wood, claws and all, so you can spot it from across the kitchen.
  • Four rubber feet are screwed into the bottom, so they won't fall off or get lost.
  • It arrives packed in a muslin bag, so it's ready to give the minute it lands.

Maryland is known for its blue crabs and crab cakes, so it's no surprise this trivet is a customer favorite. Keep it by the stove so it's ready for a hot pan, or set it on the table under a serving dish. When it isn't working, it's kitchen decor, and more than a few customers have told us theirs hangs on the wall because it's too pretty to put a pan on.

Each one is made in our Hampden woodshop in Baltimore from maple butcher block, a sustainably harvested American hardwood. The crab is cut by hand with a scroll saw, then the trivet is sanded and finished by hand. It's thicker than most people expect from a trivet, and because wood is wood, the color of yours may vary a little from the photos.

Customers give this crab trivet as a housewarming gift, a birthday gift, and a wedding gift, and it's a favorite for anyone who grew up in Maryland or wishes they had. The crab is also the sign for Cancer, which makes it a fun pick for a summer birthday. One customer calls it her go-to gift and says people love it when it's personalized with their name. Another bought one for a Maryland native and came right back for a second. If they love crabs as much as we do, pair it with our crab coasters or the personalized crab cutting board, or see all of our wooden trivets.

Make It Yours

Add a name or a date, laser engraved under the crab cutout in our Baltimore woodshop. A family name, a wedding date, or the year they moved in turns a kitchen favorite into a keepsake.

Frequently Asked Questions

When will my order ship?

Most orders ship within 1–2 business days after they're ready. Personalized and made-to-order items are made first, and the Shipping tab on each product page lists that production time.

Once we generate a shipping label, you'll get a confirmation email with a tracking number. It can take up to 24 hours for the carrier to start updating tracking information, so don't worry if it shows nothing right away.

Sending this as a gift? We never include pricing on the packing slip — so it's safe to ship directly to the recipient.

What happens if I'm not happy with my order?

We unconditionally guarantee every gift we make. If something arrives that doesn't live up to your expectations — a defect, damage in transit, anything that isn't right — contact us and we'll make it right by sending a replacement.

We've been doing this since 2013, and we'd rather you tell us when something's wrong than walk away unhappy. Email kim@wordswithboards.com or use our contact page and we'll take care of you.

Can I see a proof before my board is made?

We do not provide proofs unless the board has special design features, such as custom messaging or logos not shown on the web site.

What is a trivet used for?

A trivet sits under a hot pan or dish to protect your counter or table from burn marks. Ours are decorative, too, so they can stay out on the counter when they're not in use.

How do I care for a wooden trivet?

Wash it with mild soap and water as needed, and let it dry completely on all sides. Never put it in the dishwasher or let it sit in water.

Proudly Made in America

We believe made in America matters — for the hands that make it, the economy we support, and the planet we all share.

Inside Our Baltimore Woodshop

In our Hampden woodshop, our artisans cut, sand, and finish our boards and lazy susans by hand, whether the words are hand-cut on a scroll saw or engraved in our studio. No shortcuts. Ever.
