A Lemon-Scented Cutting Board Oil in an Easy Spray Bottle

For anyone with a wooden board they love, or anyone giving one, this food-grade mineral oil is the simplest way to keep it looking the way it did the day it arrived. A few sprays when the wood starts to look dry, and the grain comes right back to life. A touch of lemon essential oil makes the job smell as good as the board looks.

Why This Food-Grade Mineral Oil Is So Lovable

  • The spray top gets oil into the spots a cloth misses, including the spaces between the hand-cut letters on a personalized board.
  • A little lemon essential oil adds a light, clean scent, which makes oiling a board a lot more pleasant than it is with plain mineral oil.
  • It's food-grade mineral oil, so it won't go rancid the way cooking oils can, and it's certified Kosher, Pareve, and Halal.
  • It works on more than cutting boards: use it on wooden spoons and utensils, and on our lazy susans with the food-safe finish.

Wood is thirsty. Every wash pulls a little moisture out of a board, and a board that's left dry can fade, feel rough, and eventually crack. Oil is what keeps that from happening. Wash your board, let it dry completely, then spray on a thin coat and rub it in with a clean cloth. Let it soak in for at least a few hours (overnight is even better), and wipe off anything that's left with a lint-free cloth. You don't need to do this after every wash. Just reach for the bottle whenever the wood starts to look or feel dry. Our guide to cleaning a wooden cutting board walks through the whole routine.

We add the lemon essential oil and bottle it in our Hampden woodshop in Baltimore, and we chose a spray top for a reason. On our personalized cutting boards, the names are cut right through the wood with a scroll saw, and those letters need oil as much as the rest of the board does. A quick spray reaches between them in a way a cloth can't.

It's an easy thing to add when you're giving a board, so the gift arrives with everything needed to care for it. One customer sent a bottle along with a board for her sister, who collects cutting boards and never knew what to use on them. Another used plain mineral oil for years before trying this one, and told us she'll never go back.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I oil a wooden cutting board?

Start with a clean board that has dried completely. Apply a thin coat of food-grade mineral oil and rub it in with a clean cloth. Let it soak in for at least a few hours (overnight is best), then wipe off any extra with a lint-free cloth.

How often should I oil my cutting board?

You don't need to oil it every time you wash it. Oil it whenever the wood starts to look or feel dry. The oil keeps the board from drying out, cracking, and absorbing moisture.

Can I use olive oil or vegetable oil on a cutting board?

We don't recommend it. Oils made from vegetable or animal fat can go rancid over time. Use food-grade mineral oil instead; fractionated coconut oil also works.

When will my order ship?

Most orders ship within 1–2 business days after they're ready. Personalized and made-to-order items are made first, and the Shipping tab on each product page lists that production time.

Once we generate a shipping label, you'll get a confirmation email with a tracking number. It can take up to 24 hours for the carrier to start updating tracking information, so don't worry if it shows nothing right away.

Sending this as a gift? We never include pricing on the packing slip — so it's safe to ship directly to the recipient.

Love this stuff!!

I had been using mineral oil on my cutting boards for years. I came across the Lemon Cutting Board Oil one day, I will never go back. The light lemon scent makes rubbing this in a bit more pleasant than plain ol' mineral oil. As long as Words with Boards will have me, I'm a customer for life.
