A Crab Ornament for Anyone Whose Heart Is in Maryland

For the Marylander by birth, the friend who moved away and still talks about crab feasts, or the family with a place on the Bay, this wooden crab Christmas ornament puts a little bit of summer on the tree. Each one is designed and laser cut in our Baltimore woodshop from American hardwood, in maple, cherry, or walnut. It arrives on a red ribbon in a cotton bag, ready to give.

Why This Crab Christmas Ornament Is So Lovable

  • It comes in three woods: light maple, warm cherry, or dark walnut, so you can match their tree or give one of each.
  • It's bigger than most ornaments, so it stands out on the tree and looks just as good in a kitchen window the rest of the year.
  • The red ribbon is already attached and each ornament comes packed in a cotton bag, so it's ready to hang, tuck into a stocking, or tie onto a bigger gift.
  • It's a Maryland crab made in Maryland: we designed it ourselves, and every one is cut in our Hampden woodshop in Baltimore.

In Maryland, eating a crab is more than dinner, it's an experience: newspaper spread across the picnic table, a pile of steamed crabs, mallets, and a long summer afternoon with the people you love. Hanging one on the tree brings a little of that back in December. And there's no rule that says it has to go back in the box when the tree comes down. It looks right at home in a kitchen window or at the beach house all year.

Every ornament is laser cut in our Hampden woodshop from sustainably forested American hardwood. Because it's real wood, the grain and color of each crab are a little different, so no two are exactly alike. It's thin and light enough for a branch, so handle it gently, the way you would a glass ornament.

It's an easy gift for a Maryland native, a friend who's moving away, new neighbors, or a host who loves a crab feast. Giving something bigger to a crab lover? Pair it with our crab coasters, Blue Crab Trivet, or personalized crab cutting board. Years from now, it will still be the ornament that gets someone telling the story of that one crab feast.

Make It Yours

Choose maple, cherry, or walnut. Then turn it into a keepsake: with a felt-tip pen, write a name, the year, or a short message on the back, like the summer of their first crab feast or the year they moved away.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I care for wooden ornaments?

Wipe them with a soft, dry cloth and store them somewhere dry between seasons. Keep them away from water so the wood stays smooth.

When will my order ship?

Most orders ship within 1–2 business days after they're ready. Personalized and made-to-order items are made first, and the Shipping tab on each product page lists that production time.

Once we generate a shipping label, you'll get a confirmation email with a tracking number. It can take up to 24 hours for the carrier to start updating tracking information, so don't worry if it shows nothing right away.

Sending this as a gift? We never include pricing on the packing slip — so it's safe to ship directly to the recipient.

What happens if I'm not happy with my order?

We unconditionally guarantee every gift we make. If something arrives that doesn't live up to your expectations — a defect, damage in transit, anything that isn't right — contact us and we'll make it right by sending a replacement.

We've been doing this since 2013, and we'd rather you tell us when something's wrong than walk away unhappy. Email kim@wordswithboards.com or use our contact page and we'll take care of you.

Proudly Made in America

We believe made in America matters — for the hands that make it, the economy we support, and the planet we all share.

Inside Our Baltimore Woodshop

In our Hampden woodshop, our artisans cut, sand, and finish our boards and lazy susans by hand, whether the words are hand-cut on a scroll saw or engraved in our studio. No shortcuts. Ever.
